Finish Strong: Don’t Forget Your Sleeve and Label for Show Entries!

Your entry is finished and you’re ready for Fanfare of Quilts…almost!

Before you put that beautiful creation in the “finished” pile, there are two important details to take care of: a label for EVERY item and, for most items, a hanging sleeve.

First Up: The Hanging Sleeve

Our standard method for displaying entries at Fanfare of Quilts is a 4-inch hanging sleeve.

Here’s the easy rule to remember:

If your entry is square, rectangular, or round and has three layers, it needs a sleeve.

That includes quilts of all sizes. Please don’t assume that because an item is small, round, or intended as a wall hanging that it won’t need a sleeve. If it can reasonably be displayed using our standard hanging method, please add one.

Already have a favorite way to make and attach your sleeves? Keep using it! There is no required construction method—the finished sleeve simply needs to be 4 inches.

If you haven’t added a sleeve before, or would like a little help or a refresher, this video walks you through one method:

The video is provided as a resource, not as the only acceptable method. Use the technique that works best for you!

What About Items That Just Don’t Work With a Sleeve?

We know quilt show entries come in all shapes and forms! Some items simply aren’t suited to a traditional hanging sleeve. Pillows, wearables, and other dimensional or unusually constructed pieces are good examples.

Special consideration will be given to entries where a sleeve doesn’t make sense because of the type of item or the method used to construct it.

If you have an entry that you believe cannot reasonably accommodate a sleeve, please contact Darla. The Quilt Show Committee will determine the best way to display it safely and appropriately.

When in doubt, ask! We would much rather work through the display method with you ahead of time than discover at show set-up that we don’t have a good way to display your entry.

EVERY Item Needs a Label

Whether your entry is a traditional quilt, a wall hanging, a pillow, a wearable, home décor, or something completely unexpected, EVERY item entered in Fanfare of Quilts must have a label securely attached.

At a minimum, your label MUST include:

  • Quilt/Item Name — this must match the name on your registration form.
  • Entrant’s Name — this must match the Entrant’s Name on your registration form.

These two pieces of information are especially important when the show comes down. We will have many different entries being removed from display, sorted, and returned to their owners. Your label allows us to match each item to its registration information and make sure it gets back to the right person.

Have a favorite method for making quilt labels? Use it! Your label can be made however you prefer. The important part for Fanfare is that it is securely attached and contains the required information.

If you need some ideas or assistance making a label, this video demonstrates one method:

Again, this video is simply a resource; you do not need to use this particular method.

While they aren’t required for the show, I also recommend adding the pattern name and date completed to your label. Years from now, you may be very glad you did!

You are also welcome to include additional information—who the item was made for, the occasion, the quilter, a special message, or anything else that helps tell its story.

Don’t Want a Permanent Label?

That’s okay! If you don’t want the show label to remain permanently attached to your item, simply attach it with an easy whip stitch. After the show, you can remove it without much fuss.

If you plan to gift the item later and want to add or replace the label with more personalized information, that’s perfectly fine too.

Just remember: EVERY item must have a label while on display at Fanfare of Quilts, and that label MUST include:

  • Quilt/Item Name
  • Entrant’s Name exactly as they appear on the registration form

So, before you call that entry finished:

  1. Label every item.
  2. Square, rectangular, or round + 3 layers = Add a 4″ sleeve.
  3. Use whatever construction method works best for you.
  4. Have an unusual item? Ask us about the exception!

Then you really are ready for Fanfare of Quilts 2027!
