Ann Farfan, a lifelong quilter and sewist who celebrates her 90th birthday this Labor Day weekend, generously donated her fabric stash and unfinished quilts to Bits n Pieces through her granddaughter, Amy.
When Amy Farfan Medina contacted the Guild about donating her grandmother’s fabric and unfinished quilts, she wanted to make sure that the materials accumulated over a lifetime of creativity would continue to be used and appreciated. We were delighted to help make that happen.
Amy’s grandmother, Ann Farfan, has been an artist throughout her life. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Ann expressed her creativity through quilting, embroidery, painting, and many other projects. She even made clothing for her grandchildren’s Barbie and American Girl dolls.
Ann celebrates her 90th birthday over Labor Day weekend. Although her fingers no longer cooperate as they once did, her love of making and sharing will live on through the many projects created with her fabric.
The guild gratefully accepted Ann’s unfinished quilts, quilt tops, fabric, and other supplies. Some of her donated items have already been selected for the raffle baskets at Fanfare of Quilts 2027, our quilt show next March. Proceeds from these raffles help support local charities. Other materials will find their way into guild projects, charitable quilts, and a donation to City Sewing Room, one of our favorite nonprofit community sewing rooms that teach sewing and sell donated fabric, notions and sewing machines at discounted prices.
A fabric donation travels in many directions. It might become a comforting quilt for someone in need, help raise money for a community organization, inspire a guild member’s next creation, or allow an unfinished quilt to finally be completed and enjoyed. Best of all, these beautiful materials will be put to use rather than ending up in a landfill.
