Every quilter or sewist who’s ever visited City Sewing Room knows the experience: You arrive “to look” and leave with a bag of fabric, a handful of vintage bits and bobs, and an oversized roll of vinyl you never knew you needed.
Now we who love this beloved St. Louis sewing destination have another reason to celebrate. CSR is growing and named Liz Henning its first executive director.
Liz brings 20 years of nonprofit operations and communications experience—as well as a background in costume design. She was already a fan of the organization’s Makers’ Mart, where she shopped for fabric and trim for local theater productions.
The Makers’ Mart may feel like a quilter’s treasure hunt, but it also supports a serious mission. Donated fabric, sewing machines and supplies are sold at deeply discounted prices, keeping useful materials out of landfills while helping City Sewing Room provide sewing and quilting instruction to people of all ages and abilities.
Bits ‘n’ Pieces selected CSR as its charity this year, so donate Grandma’s stash, shop the shelves, take a class, and watch for them at our upcoming Fanfare of Quilts 2027 in March. And say hi to Liz next time you visit.
